Gleanings From The Field.

Dedication. To my first charge, the Gethsemane Lutheran Church of St. Louis, Mo., in whose service twelve years have now been spent, July 1905--July, 1917, this book is affectionately dedicated, with the fervent prayer that the congregation may continue to be a "salt that has not lost its savor," a "light that is not hid under a bushel," but shineth to the glory of God and the consummation of His Kingdom. Pastor Carl Joseph Segerhammer, B. D., Pastor of the Gethsemane Lutheran Church, St. Louis,Mo. 1912-1917.

Forward. This is a peculiar book,--both in its contents and in its object. It is a peculiar field in which, in this metropolis, the author has spent twelve years of serious labor, His labors, we know, have been a blessing, by the grace of God, not only for his small and struggling congregation, but for himself as well. The book is proof hereof! Pick out any subject you will--of the Sermons, Addresses, Short Articles, Poems, etc.--and you will soon confess that the author is efficient and the reading of his book is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. Wherefore there is no doubt that young clergymen and students, laboring in similar fields and under similar circumstances, will find much advice and exhortation in these pages how to go about a great many things and learn to succeed; and no less will the layman learn and appreciate its admonitions and instructions. The book is edifying on every page! Its name, "Gleanings from the Field", is most proper--the contents being a veritable panorama of all the different kinds of work, spiritual and social, joyous and sorrowful, great and small, as it occurs in the life of a Lutheran pastor and congregation. And the prime object and purpose of the book is equally noble! Both pastor and congregation, in giving good value in this book to all who buy it, intend nothing less than to apply the proceeds of all sales to the lessening of the burdening debt resting upon their house of worship. Can you refuse? Read, --you will get your money's worth. We have read it with pleasure and great benefit. So will you. And your dollar goes into God's treasury. ---Louis Lange Publishing Co., St. Louis, Mo.
