Our little photograph, just left, is that of a little Dutch girl, not a little "deutsch" girl, so some of you may be thinking. However, we do know the difference between the two. It is said that the Pennsylvania Germans where often mistaken by many "English" American descendants as the "Dutch" because they were unfamiliar with German accents. So when the German immigrants said "Yes, I am Deutsch" Americans thought they meant Dutch because it sounded as though they were saying "Dutch."While some of the confusion still exists today, certainly almost no detectable prejudice between the descendants of German, Dutch, and Scandinavian peoples who immigrated to the United States does. There was a brief period of suspicion, during the world wars and for a few years afterward, between the American government and immigrated Germans of the early to mid 20th century. But after a while, life in the United States seemed to return to normal and the frictions died out.
So? why all the explaining then? Well, the wonderful heritage of all those peoples who were German, Dutch, and Scandinavian still remains here in America, particularly in the mid-west and northern half of the United States where they settled. And when we speak of heritage, what we are referring to is the language, religion, folk art, folk customs, holiday celebrations, classic literature and music. Of these kinds of gifts, we are pleased to be proud of.
Our little collection of clipart celebrates the positive gifts of folk art and culture still celebrated and practiced among the descendants of Germany, Holland, Sweden and a few other Norwegian peoples. As far as we know, there are no other collections similar to this one on the web. There are many folk artists on the web, however, and we do link to their little shops and studios under "Deutsch Folk Traditions" just left on your screen. Please read our Terms Of Use located at the Quarterly Illustrator, before downloading any of these "deutsch" graphics below. This little collection is brought to you by www.pickandprintgallery.com
